Interview with Author Hannah Cowan
We are so excited to be working with our next Indie Author Spotlight: Hannah Cowan! Author of over 20 books, we fell in love with Hannah’s small town romances a few years back, and she writes such a WIDE range of stories: from sports to billionaires to rockstars to ranchers to tattoo artists to hockey omegaverse and more. She really has almost anything that you’d be looking for in a contemporary romance!
For the Indie Author Spotlight Project, we decided to create scents for her latest series, Oak Point, so that you can feel a part of the settings while you read: Into the Shade tattoo studio & Painted Sky ranch. Montgomery Pack is also in our shop, which is inspired by her first omegaverse pack and the lemon shortbread scented omega that brings them together. She spoke with us about being an indie author, how she writes her small-towns, and so much more!

Hannah is a top 40 bestselling author from Western Canada. Obsessed with swoon-worthy romance, she decided to take a leap and try her hand at creating stories that will have you fanning your face and giggling in the most embarrassing way possible. Hopefully, that’s exactly what her stories have done!
You are excellent at writing a small town and fleshing it out until the town itself feels like a character in the story. What advice do you have for other authors who would like to try diving into the world of small-town romance?
Imagine where you would want to live, if you could choose anywhere. Think cozy, friendly, close-knit. I've lived in cities of all different sizes, but there is something about living somewhere where you can pop into the post office and have a chat with whomever is working and have them remember you and what you spoke about last. That's what I try to bring into my books. The perfect place where you would want to stay forever.
What is some advice that you’d give to aspiring authors who are thinking about indie publishing?
Buckle up and know that it takes time. It can be the most fulfilling job in the world, but also incredibly lonely and exhausting. Overnight success is very rare, so try not to compare yourself to those authors who pick up right off their debut release. It's okay to go slow and steady, too. And make sure to build a group of people around you who are going to lift you up.
What is your favorite thing about Indie Publishing?
Hands down the freedom. I can release the books I want whenever I want to. I have complete control over my career and that is really reassuring to me. I've been traditionally published in the UK/Commonwealth, and I hands down prefer my indie career, while I still love seeing my books in all of the chain stores over there.
You recently published your first omegaverse! Can you tell us a bit about that experience and what made you want to dive into that world?
I love omegaverse down to my very core, but it was SO hard. I was stumped often, and despite having read so so many prior to diving into my own, still had moments where I went, "Wait, how does this happen? Is this right, or am I being crazy?" It was the first time I had to write more than two main characters and decided to do five which was insane. For book 2, I won't be going with that many again, that's for sure hahahaha. Still, it was so incredibly fun and fulfilling, and I'm proud of what I've done. I can't wait to dive back into this world.
What genre have you not written yet that you’d be interested in?
Dark romance or full shifter. I've been flirting with a dark romance manuscript for years now, and would love to finally sit down and give it my full attention. And shifter romance is one of my favourites! It's a bit more complicated than I'm used to, though.
You have quite a backlist. Where should readers start if they’re brand new to you and your stories?
I always say it depends on what you like! If sports romance is your thing, and you like reading from the very start with interconnected series', then the Swift Hat Trick trilogy for sure. But, if you like small town, then Cherry Peak is the place to start.
What is the best way to support you as an indie author?
Reading on KU definitely. But also downloading my audiobooks from libraries and purchasing my paperbacks from indie bookstores. You can also find me on Instagram and TikTok at @hannahcowanauthor.
What’s next for you?
I'm releasing my very first baseball romance that is releasing in March!
